The Benefits and Advantages of LED Lighting

LEDs were invented in 1961 and it have only grown in popularity since they were unleashed on the world. They are bright, are energy efficient and have 100s of uses. Here in this blog, we are going to talk about all the wonderful benefits this technology offers and all the great advantages they have over other types of lighting.

What is an LED, Anyways?

LED stands for light emitting diode. That is quite long to say, so most people just refer to them as LEDs. By definition, they are an electronic device that emits light when an electrical current is passed through it. They take many shapes and forms from a common 120V standard light bulb found in the home to LED tubing in commercial lighting applications. They have many benefits and advantages over previous generations of lighting

Long Life Span

Easily the biggest advantage of LEDs is their lifespan over traditional lighting methods. With an average life span of 50,000 hours or more which is equivalent to 10+ years or so of usage, this clearly shows a distance advantage of longevity. Just to give you one comparison, the average lifespan of an incandescent light bulb is only 1000 hours or so making it last approximately 40 times longer! wow

Extremely Energy Efficient

Another great feature of LED bulbs is the fact that they are very efficient in terms of energy usage. They typically use 75% less energy measured in watts when comparing to an incandescent light bulb. This can save a lot of money on your electrical bill at the end of the month, especially on a large facility or building, where lights can be on for long periods of time.

Safety Using LEDs

Another perk to using LEDs for lighting is that they create next to no heat and operate on low voltage. This means they are the preferred choice as you can use them virtually in almost any application. This makes them ideal in wet or damp locations and outdoor environments. It will also not burn to the touch.

Environmentally Friendly Choice

This technology does not use anything harmful to the environment similar to mercury vapor blubs or fluorescent tubes. This way when it comes time to dispose of, they are not harming the environment in any way.

Hot and Cold Climates

Given that LEDs produce very little heat, and are not affected by temperature, they can be used in cold and hot climates. There are few applications where they are not ideal to use.

LEDs are excellent for yet another reason. They are versatile when it comes to color temperature range. Examples of this would be warm white, cool white, and daylight. Depending upon preference and application, they produce the right color light for the given situation.

LED and Dimmers

LED technology has the capability to dim a light from 0 percent all the way to 100%. This is a great feature to have as it makes it energy efficient and helps to set the mood in a room or ideal light depending upon the time of day. LEDs are not all created equal so you need to ensure that the bulbs are rated to be dimmable. Also the dimmer that is used for LEDs uses a slightly different technology so it needs to be rated for use.

Instantaneous Illumination

The great thing about LEDS is that they do not need to warm up or or there is not a delay in lighting up a room. Once turned on, They go from 0 to 100 percent illumination. This makes these ideal for situations where the light goes on and off frequently. It has no effect on the life span of the bulb, either.

Can Take Many Shapes and Forms

LEDs are referred to as solid state devices meaning that they do not need glass surrounding them like incandescent, fluorescent, and high pressure sodium bulbs. They can be put side by side, and used as LED tape for example, or shaped to look like a traditional light bulb. If you use your imagination, the sky is virtually the limit as all the shapes and forms an LED can take.

Directional Lighting

Traditional lighting typically uses 360 degrees to illuminate an object. In order to effectively use this light effectively, you have to use directional/reflective accessory surfaces to properly direct the light around the source. With LED lighting, this is not the case. LEDs use 180 degrees to illuminate around, making them appear brighter and more focused.
